Exciting times!

Well, life has been super busy lately, however there are some exciting things underway.
One of which is a book illustration opportunity that has popped up, which looks fantastic!
The little story is so very cute, and the characters are delightful, so I am hoping that I can do justice to them!

I drew up some very rough concept drawings for the main character who is a little girl - and asked the author if I could share it with you guys on here for some feedback.

So here are some of the concepts. At the moment the one that most people have chosen is the one at the bottom right who is kneeling down. The only thing I am trying to decide now is whether to give her the eyes that she has here - or to keep the same design for the hair and body but give her eyes like the character on the far left.

What are your thoughts everyone? Your feedback is most welcome! I'll keep working away on some concepts and maybe pop up some more soon!

  1. I would normally go for big expressive eyes for a young girl... but the girl on the bottom right is awesome with the eyes she has. Couldn't hurt to try the alternative... but I think you've got a winner already.

    1. Thanks Rachel! That is really helpful! It's good to know what people out there would most like - I think the design of the character is probably the most important part of the illustration process. If people can't connect with the character, then you have a problem!
(Hope you and your family are going well by the way - and congrats again on your new little member of the family! Although I suppose he isn't so new any more!)

  3. Sounds like a cool project!

I think they're all cute, but I like the one bottom-right most. She looks shy and innocent. I think the eyes contribute to this, while the girl with big eyes appears more confident and street-wise (or créche-wise). Of course, body language plays a big part. You've captured different emotions/feelings very well. I definitely prefer the fuller limbs and the curly/wavy/messy hair.

  4. I'm loving the eyes on the little girl (bottom right also) as they are. Quite cute and dainty. There is my 2 cents :)

  6. I think both eyes are lovely. (Helpful, aren't I?) She looks very sweet with the ones she has now, but would the bigger ones give you more scope for expression? (I know next to nothing about drawing, so I hope that's not an offensive question!)
